BioI'm the fourth and much-youngest daughter of a U.S. Army lieutenant colonel from Tennessee. My mother was a Phi Beta Kappa and the daughter of a Phi Beta Kappa - my great-grandmother went to college. My father's grandfather founded a teacher's college. We didn't have money but by gum we are a well educated lot.
My dad was diagnosed terminal when was 11, just about the time the last sister went off to college. He didn't die for more than twenty years - it took a second terminal disease. As one Walter Reed intern said, these old birds are tough. Anyway, that tells you a lot about my growing up. My folks are gone now, and my grandparents, and a disturbing number of my growing-up friends. I often feel very...alone. Sometimes I remember that I have, and always have had, spectacular friends.
